describe your yard as a child – did you help with the yard work?

(on today’s slip of paper drawn from the jar)

A swing.

Growing up, I always had a swing.

We moved around a lot, but that was the one constant in my memory of childhood yards.

Either a rusty swing set,

Or a rope thrown over a tree limb

with a board for a seat.

Or even a tire swing.

Nothing like swinging on a summer day

the wind in your face

going up high

touching the leaves with your feet

back and forth

That sounds so good, I wonder why we don’t have swings as adults?  Something that gave us such pleasure as kids, why would we not continue this?  Yes, we have a porch swing, but it is not really the same…

Maybe we as adults get our kicks in other ways, but why?

what kind of extra-curricular activities did you participate in at school?

In high school I was on the yearbook staff, which was a lot of fun.  Besides putting together page layouts, picking out pictures, etc, we got to skip a lot of classes to go on photo shoots and on picture day. (Photo above is senior picture day – wearing the guys’ outfit of coat and tie).

Also in high school I did the geeky thing of working in the school library – learned the Dewey Decimal System and all!

I was a cheerleader in grade school and high school (having no athletic ability, just a big mouth).  It was a great way to get to see all the ballgames, home and away, and of course to get in free.  We would raise money for new uniforms or for camp by baking and selling cupcakes at the games, or selling Krispy Kreme donuts on Saturdays.  My mom even made some of our uniforms.

The band had the band boosters and lots of money, the athletes had organizations sponsoring them, but the cheerleading program was not really supported at all.  One of the coaches was in charge of us, so we pretty much did what we needed to do.  Lots of great memories during this time – like meeting my future husband…

That’s about it for my structured extracurricular activities, plus of course, the normal teen stuff, going to dances, hanging out with friends, listening to records, talking on the phone – ahh, the good ol’ days (?).

What were your fears, expectations, anticipations about getting married?

(on today’s slip of paper drawn from the jar)

No Fear!

I was in love, I knew it all, I was 19 (well, almost).

No worries, just anticipation.

Packed up our tent and sleeping bags and hit the road for a 2 week honeymoon across the country, ending up in Colorado.  Cooking on the Coleman stove, cuddling around the campfire, seeing the sights.  Back home to play house, learn to cook, grow up.

Still no worries, no regrets.  It was obviously meant to be, we are still playing house after 33 years …

Did it snow much when you were a child – tell something about it, what did you do?

(on today’s slip of paper drawn from the jar)

some snow thoughts:

snow man as big as me

snow ice cream

avoid yellow snow

snow ball fights

snow balls saved in the freezer

footprints in the snow

snow angels

no school

sledding down the driveway

snow down your collar

snow in your boots

snow tracked in the house

melting snow dripping off the house

a slippery, snowy, slushy world

If you could be an animal, which one would you choose and why?

A cat

Most definitely a cat

I would sleep all the time

You can rub my back, scratch my head

You expect me to eat that

I ate it, it didn’t set well, you will find it later..

Play? It has to be my idea

Go outside? yeah right

Just keep me warm and happy or else

Have you met or worked with famous people? Who – Where, etc.

(on today’s slip of paper drawn from the jar)

In the future everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes. ~Andy Warhol

Have I met anyone famous (famous, adj. – widely known and esteemed) no, not really…

Wait, there is Jim Comer, long time family friend, author, speaker.  He has been on the Today Show and Jeopardy.  Meet Jim, see and hear him speak here about parenting his parents and promoting his new book, “When Roles Reverse.”

And how could I forget my friends Sherry and Tim who were married on live TV on Valentine’s Day 10 years ago!  They are pretty famous ’round these parts.

What about just seeing someone famous – from afar, in the same room, at a live performance:

John Denver, Dolly Parton, Three Dog Night, Elton John, Jeff Foxworthy, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Billy Joel, Ronnie Milsap, Alabama, Jerry Clower… how’s that for name-dropping?  A pretty impressive list, don’t you think?

Let’s see, what about famous events in our family?

Melissa won a limbo contest at the skating rink…

Buddy won the Carpenter Apprentice contest…

My mom once bowled a 300 game…

My dad was in the military, serving in the Korea twice, Japan , Germany…

Carrie is the only person I know who has gone skydiving, how brave is that?

(Maybe you have never heard of these folks, but they are famous to me!)
