origin of ‘memories in a jar’

I received a special Christmas gift from my daughter, Carrie – her gifts are usually home-made, unique, and from the heart. This gift consists of a journal and a jar containing 101 little handmade envelopes, each with a message inside, along with some candy! The first page of the journal says:
